Two school children - Yang Kerui, a girl and Yu Haotian, a boy, both 11, momentarily shifted the attention of journalists covering a press conference held at the sidelines of the Fifth Session of the 12th CPPCC National Committee meeting in Beijing last Thursday, from the main business of the day.

The journalists were intrigued by the children’s presence because they were also there to report on proceedings at the press conference and were seen busily taking down notes as the speakers addressed the journalists, not in any way overawed by the large gathering of reporters.

In no time many of the journalists who had sighted the two children with their name tags around their necks like all the other participants, gathered around them while the conference was still ongoing, interviewed and took pictures of them.

The two class five pupils were from the NiuTong Press of Youth Times, a news agency in the Zhejiang province which targets teenaged readers.

Ms. Yang is currently studying at the Shengli Elementary School at Hangzhou, while the boy, Master Yu, is from the Yuhe Elementary School, all in the Zhejiang province. They told the enthralled journalists that they were at the press conference with their teachers to participate in the national event and get to learn more about their country.

“As young reporters, we shoulder the responsibility of bringing what we see and hear to more young readers. Despite the difficulty of the topic at today’s conference, we will still try very hard to follow the speech and take note of things that interest them,” the excited pupils said.

When asked about their dreams, Yang said that she would like to become a professional journalist in the future.

Yu, however, said he would like to be a part-time journalist because his dream was to become an astronaut, meeting more people and gaining more knowledge.
