The second largest economy in the world also plans to promote joint efforts to build the Belt and Road Initiative, an initiative proposed by China in 2013 that envisages a trade and infrastructure network that will connect about 60 countries in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa along the ancient Silk Road and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road routes.
The initiative is also expected to boost international trade by enhancing transportation through the development of railways, highways and ports and will link up Africa through Kenya.

Making China’s plans known at the Fifth Session of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) on Friday, the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the CPPCC, Mr. Yu Zhengsheng said “We will offer suggestions on improving and strengthening China’s medical assistance efforts in Africa, on strengthening the cultural foundation for joint efforts to build the Belt and Road Initiative, and on promoting deeper mutual opening at a higher level.”
Reading a 26-page report to a packed audience of over 2,000 political
advisors to the government and 3,000 journalists at the Great Hall of the
People, Mr. Yu said China would also carry out public diplomacy and cultural
exchanges, as well as increase the CPPCC’s international communication.
He said that would be done primarily to inform others about China’s multiparty system and political consultation that exists under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), as well as the nature, position and role of the CPPCC.
The country’s focus would also be on “increasing awareness of the values, institutional strengths and achievements of contemporary China; and on explaining China’s proposition for improving global economic governance and its idea of building an international community of a shared future so as to create a sound external environment,” he said.
Press conferences
Press conferences preceded the fifth session of the 12th
CPPCC and the National People’s Congress (NPC) at which thousands of
journalists from all over world were allowed to ask questions on various issues
on national and international affairs.
At the press conference held on Saturday prior to the NPC which comes off on Sunday, March 5, 2017, the Spokesperson of the Standing Committee, Mrs. Fu Ying said the preparatory meeting had elected the Presidium with 169 members and elected the Vice Chairman of the NPC, Mr. Li Jianguo as the Secretary General of the Session.
She also said the session would last for 10 and a half days, involve 16 press conferences and end on March 15 after discussing 11 items on the agenda, after which Premier Li Keqiand would address a press conference.
“Apart from routine deliberations on the six reports, including the report on the work of the government, deputies will deliberate on the draft General Provisions of Civil Law, which provides an overarching framework for the civil code, and on three motions regarding the election of deputies for the 13th NPC,” she stated.
