GWCL pleads with, assures Accra West consumers

BY EDMUND SMITH-ASANTE

The management of Aqua Vitens Rand Ltd (AVRL), working for and on behalf of Ghana Water Company Ltd. as the Operator, has stated that it is aware of the current erratic water supply to customers in the western parts of Accra served by the Weija Treatment Plant and assured that “should the situation become critical, special emergency services will be organised for critical institutions such as hospitals and schools.”
In a press statement dated December 9, 2010 and signed by Stanley Martey, Communications Manager, AVRL, the operator said the situation has been caused primarily by disruptions to power supply on which the Weija Treatment Plant relies. “Besides, one of our booster stations located at Sowutuom has a fault that is being rectified,” the statement said.
“We have been duly informed by the ECG that they are currently carrying out substantial works on their infrastructure to improve power supply. We should explain to our customers that water supply is heavily dependent on power; that even a five minute interruption can destabilise water services by 12 to 24 hours. The more frequent the power outages, the more the water situation is compounded,” AVRL explained.
Stating its understanding that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) cannot improve power supply substantially without inconveniencing its customers, including AVRL & GWCL, the statement pleaded, “We are therefore asking our customers for their understanding.”
The worst affected areas include Achimota, Sowutuom, Dome, Taifa, Santa Maria, Kwashieman, Gbawe, Christian Village, Dome Pillar Two, Haatso, Madina and Alhaji, among others.
Indicating its regret for any inconveniences caused as a result of the erratic power supply, AVRL urged affected customers to text 1700 from any network or call free on 0800 40 000 on Vodafone cell and land lines only and 0302-211260 for other telephone networks for further enquiries.
