Ghana urban water gets new MD

The subsidiary company established by the Government of Ghana to manage the operations of the Ghana Water Company Limited after the exit of Aqua Vitens Rand Limited in June this year, Ghana Urban Water Limited (GUWL), now has a managing director.
The new MD, Ing. Senyo Theodore Amengor, who is no stranger to the management of water in Ghana, joined the then Ghana Water and Sewerage Corporation (GWSC) in August, 1980 and was posted to the Eastern Region as Projects Engineer till February, 1984.
Ing Senyo Amengor is a versatile Civil Engineering professional, specialised in water supply and environmental engineering, with a very rich experience in personnel and financial management and has a thirty-two year working experience in the water sector.
Before his new appointment, Senyo Amengor was the Chief Operating Officer for the erstwhile Aqua Vitens Rand Limited and on several occasions acted as the Managing Director.
Commenting on his appointment, he thanked the Government for the confidence reposed in Ghanaian Management capability and promised that, together with his team of well endowed professionals, they will live up to expectation.
“I am not interested in who takes the credit; the job must be done, effectively and efficiently to the satisfaction of all. We are capable,” he said.
The new GUWL MD before his new designation, also worked as a Counterpart Engineer on a Canadian Government (CIDA) funded Urban and Rural water Project in Northern Ghana at the Head Office of the erstwhile GWSC and designed and supervised the Water Supply Systems Improvement and Stabilisation Programme, also in the Northern Region.
According to a statement announcing his appointment, Ing. Amengor worked as a Regional Engineer in the Ashanti and Central Regions and became the Regional Director of the Volta Region in March, 1997.
The statement said in October, 1999 he was transferred to the Brong Ahafo Region as the Regional Chief Manager, then to Tema Region when the Greater Accra Region was divided into three (3) operational regions by the Ghana Water Company Limited, adding that he also became the Regional Chief Manager for Accra West Region and General Manager for Projects in November, 2008.
Ing. Senyo Amengor, a member of the Ghana Institute of Engineers was from 1988 to 1997 the staff representative on the Board of GWSC, where he won the admiration of many because of his good interpersonal skills, and ability to motivate and inspire people and above all, his willingness to make personal sacrifices and ability to stay focused while maintaining emotional intelligence.
Touching on his educational and professional qualification for the job, the statement said Ing. Amengor currently holds an Executive Masters in Business Administration (EMBA) from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and a Master of Science degree from International Institute for Infrastructure, Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering, Delft in the Netherlands.
It continued that an old student of Mawuli School and a member of the 1973/75 year group, he attended the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Kumasi, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree with honours in Civil Engineering from 1975 to 1979.
He has also attended and participated in several professional courses and seminars, and holds certificates in Professional Project Management, Management Development and Feasibility Studies.
The new MD also has a Certificate in Spatial Planning to Guide Urban Infrastructure Investment from London, Certificate in Planning, Appraisal, Implementation and Management of Water Supply and Sanitation Projects and Programmes from the University of Bradford, United Kingdom and Certificate in Water Resources Management, Italy.
